No smoking in Austin bars

A few weeks ago a NO SMOKING ordinance went into affect in the city of Austin. Because I just moved here from San Diego, it didn’t really make much of a difference to me (there’s no smoking in San Diego either). But, it seems like every time I go out to a bar I hear someone bitching about how they can’t smoke in bars anymore. First of all, get over it. It’s not going to change and being forced to smoke outside the bar is a great way to meet people (at least I think so).

If you live in Austin and are still bitching about not smoking in bars. Then I invite you to go to South Austin, way south: actually Manchaca (pronounced Man-Shack) to check out a bar called “Giddy Ups” First of all this bar is awesome, if I must say so myself. The Juke Box has all of the country greats on it. The bartenders are all cool- for example one evening I was there and some guy was in the bar with his Tattoo set-up, giving people tattoos. I was chatting with the bartender (female around 30-50- hard life) and she asked if I wanted to see her “Butterfly Tattoo”, I said sure. She commenced to drop her pants in the middle of the bar, exposing her panties. She looked around her crotch area for a few seconds and then stated “ I can’t find my butterfly tattoo; I guess my pussy ate it”. She then pulled up her pants and walked away to grab my next Lone star. Another cool thing about Giddy Ups is that they only sell beer. Therefore you’re allowed to bring in your own bottle of booze if you so choose. Just like with any Bar in Austin that only serves beer and wine you can bring your own bottle and only be expected to pay for “set-ups” (ice, coke, 7-up, etc).

Oh yeah, smoking. You can smoke in Giddy Ups. Not that you ever have to light up mind you. The bar is probably the smokiest bar I have ever been to. This place will take your breath away as soon as you walk in. So, if you want to smoke, go to Giddy Ups in Manchaca Texas. I will bet after that adventure you will have a newfound respect for Not Smoking in Austin bars.
