East Side Blues at TC Lounge

On Monday I went to check out TC’s Lounge, on Webberville Rd here in Austin. It’s an old school Blues bar that actually feels like blues belongs there. On Monday’s Little Elmore Reed Blues Band plays to a packed crowd. This is how Little Elmore Reed describes TC’s:

TC’s is the last real old school blues dive remaining in Austin and is located deep in the east (traditionally African-American) side of town, about four miles from downtown and light years from the often pretentious and soul-free venues that constitute the “Live Music Capital of the World”. TC’s has been around for decades and hosts live blues bands Sunday thru Thursday nights with a DJ spinning old school R&B on the weekends. It’s a beer joint, so you can bring your own bottle. There’s a dance floor, pool tables and a jukebox crammed with B.B. King, Bobby Blue Bland, Little Johnny Taylor and Theodis Ealey records. There’s always some free homemade southern soul food in the crock pot. Bands work for love and tips. There’s no air conditioning and heat is provided by the mass of human bodies. There’s not a level surface in the place and when the joint gets to rockin’ you can actually feel the building move. It’s perfect.

This place is well worth the visit if you’re up for an East Side adventure.

Barfly’s- best bar in Austin

I’m not really sure what the criteria would need to be to make Barfly’s the best bar. I’m sure there are a lot of bars in Austin that offer up similar atmosphere and alcohol selection. But, none are within walking distance of my house and offer daily $1.50 Lonestars. I’ve been visiting Barfly’s a few times a weeks since moving to Austin and consider it my favorite spot. The bar staff is great and the patrons are friendly. Barfly’s tends to be more of a late night bar and is usually packed after 11pm everyday. They have one of the best jukebox’s in Austin and a Tornado foosball table. The Barfly is located above the Burger Tex on Airport Blvd and opens at 5pm, 7 days a week. Click here for directions. Sixteenth Annual Austin Hot Sauce Contest

I know, I know, I’m a bit late with this post. But you know what they say…better late than, blah, blah, blah. Anyway, last month (8-27-06), Austin had the 16th annual Hot Sauce contest. It was free to attend if you brought can goods. There was a pretty large crowd of people there checking the music, sampling hot sauce and drinking beer. It was HOT, dusty and HOT. I didn’t stay long, not even for a beer. Maybe next year they should consider moving to a more shader spot.

Lockhart is the Texas BBQ capital

A couple of weeks ago I went down to Lockhart to check out the BBQ that I’ve heard so much about. Lockhart is small town about 30 min south of Austin, on hwy 183. It has 4 of the best BBQ joints in Texas, so they say. It also has a cool looking old downtown. I opted to try out Kreuz Market because it was the one that I’d heard most about. First of all, the place is huge, you actually buy your meat in the smoke house and then go to another counter to get your sides. They don’t have BBQ sauce because they believe that the meat should â€œstandâ€ on its own. I got some brisket and ribs and enjoyed my meal at one of their many tables. I liked the vibe of the place but wasn’t blown away by the food or the price. But, it was well worth the trip. I’ll have to go back next month and try one of the other 3 BBQ joints.

BBQ adventure at the Salt Lick

Best little bar in Austin.

Ginnyâ€™s Little Longhorn Saloon is slowly becoming my favorite bar in Austin. Iâ€™ve been going Ginnyâ€™s 2-3 times a month since living here in Austin. Ginnyâ€™s is one of those little places on the side of the road that you pass by and donâ€™t think much of it. The inside of the bar canâ€™t be any bigger than 1000sqf, with a pool table and tables covering most of the floor and a small stage in the corner. You get a pretty varied clientele there including the older daytime drunks, hipsters, cowboys, bikers and Greasers (The Fonz wana beâ€™s). Everyone gets along and strangley enough fits together somehow. Lately Iâ€™ve been go over there on Sundays for Dale Watson and $1.50 Lone Stars. If you go on Sundayâ€™s, the action starts around 4:00 and it gets packed. The parking lot turns into â€œsocial hourâ€ with everyone hanging out and drinking beers. Itâ€™s lots of fun and what I imagine is the epitome of Austin bars. Everytime Iâ€™ve been to Ginnyâ€™s, Iâ€™ve noticed they have a chicken coupe in the back parking lot. I havenâ€™t been able to figure out what the chickenâ€™s doing there. Is it for chicken stew Mondays or Fried Chicken Saturday? Nope. Turns out, the chicken is used for â€œChicken Shit Bingoâ€; yep you guessed it. They bring the chicken inside on Sundays and put him in a pen on top of the pool table that has a floor that has grid with numbers on it. How it works is you buy tickets with numbers on them and hope the chicken shits on your number. If it does, then you win cash. If thatâ€™s not a reason to go to Ginnyâ€™s on Sundays then I donâ€™t know what is. Oh yeah, they have free hotdogs as well. If you live in Austin or are visting Austin then make sure you check out Ginnyâ€™s Little Longhorn Saloon.
