Chris Nieratko of Big Brother fame was here in Austin last night promoting his new book Skinema. Chris setup at Heather Roach’s (also of Big Brother fame) shop called LowBrow Emporium. Lowbrow is a cross between a Art, book, toy and skate shop. It’s a interesting store and if you’re in Austin it’s a must to check out. By the way, Chris will be at the Skatepark Of Austin tonight at 7pm.

Austin Public Skatepark Grand Opening

Austinâ€™s first public concrete skatepark officially opened on Saturday afternoon at Mabel Davis Park. A lot of kids came out for the street section and the old dudes were there for the bowl session. The park looks like a lot of fun. Click Here for directions.

Skatepark of Austin-Beer Bash and BBQ.

Same game: different city. I went to the Skatepark of Austin for a BBQ, beer and bowl bash on Friday night. This was my first venture into the Austin skate scene since moving here. Its funny how no matter what city youâ€™re in, all of the skateboarders look a like. Mostly because they all wear a variation of the 5 skateboarder uniforms. In case you donâ€™t know what those uniforms are:

1)Corey Duffle- black hair, tight ass jeans and a striped t-shirt

Hip-Hop- baggy pants, oversized shirt and a chain around the neck

Hesh-dirty ass jeans, vans and usually no shirt

Skater Casual- designer jeans, polo shirt and Nike dunks

Dirty Hippie- Usually has dreads and wears I-Pathâ€™s

So anyway, the skatepark was pretty cool with the usual cast of characters including the dudes with nicknames. The one nickname that really stood out was â€œshortbusâ€. I liked that one. Additionally, we had the tattooed face guy with his Pit Bull. Not every scene has the tattooed face guy but you always have a Pit Bull. The one unusual thing that I spotted was a guy with dread locks that was extremely drunk (I think he owned the place).
Never the less, the Skatepark of Austin was a great place. It has a street area with all of the usual banks, rails and ledges, a big ass bowl that goes up to 9â€™ and has a 4â€™ kidney shaped bowl with an over-vert section. The park has no air conditioner so be prepared to sweat your ass off if you stop by.
The beer, BBQ and bowl contest was a lot of fun. Iâ€™m not sure who won the contest but everyone was ripping. Thanks to everyone that gave me a beer and bummed me smokes. Oh yea, thanks to the dumb bitch that thought it was funny to shoot roman candles at everyone. Real cool.
